UNI is gearing up to host its second-annual Explore - Experience - East of Troost Tour on Saturday, April 28. The guided bus tour will provide an excellent first-hand look at each of the 10 neighborhoods that UNI serves, highlighting what each has to offer and providing an opportunity to connect with some of the residents.

UNI Announces 2017 Neighborhood Tour

The Urban Neighborhood Initiative is pleased to announce the first-ever 2017 UNI Neighborhood Tour on April 22, 2017, which will provide an opportunity for groups to visit neighborhoods east of Troost Ave. and gain a better perspective on Kansas City’s urban core.

Approximately 200 people are expected to attend, including bankers, real estate agents, small developers, entrepreneurs, church members, artists and other Gen X-age young professionals. One of the main goals of the tour is to showcase opportunities for investment within UNI neighborhoods.

KC's Newest Charter School Receives $1.6 Million Boost

Kansas City Neighborhood Academy (KCNA) today announced grants of $1-million and $600,000, respectively, from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Hall Family Foundation to support the new charter school established by the Urban Neighborhood Initiative (UNI) in partnership with Kansas City Public Schools.

KCNA will open its doors August 2 for the 2016-17 school year, serving Pre-K through second grade. Additional grade levels will be added in succeeding years, ultimately serving students in Pre-K through sixth grade.

KCNA Seeking Volunteers to Help Clean, Prepare School Grounds for Aug. 2 Opening

Kansas City Neighborhood Academy (KCNA) is currently seeking approximately 50 volunteers to assist with interior and exterior cleaning, maintenance and preparation for the new school’s Aug. 2 opening.

KCNA is looking to conduct the following tasks:
- removing and relocating excess furniture from the building
- general cleaning and debris removal in classrooms and common spaces
- painting lines on playground and sprucing-up the outdoor playground area
- assembling new bookshelves and distributing to classrooms

Kansas City Neighborhood Academy Seeks Volunteers for Meet-and-Greet Event June 25

The Urban Neighborhood Initiative and Kansas City Neighborhood Academy are seeking volunteers to assist with the new charter school’s meet-and-greet event with school staff, which will welcome enrolled families and new families interested in enrolling.

KCNA is gearing up for an afternoon of fun, games and food on Saturday, June 25 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the new school building, located at 1619 East 24th Terrace. Approximately 10 volunteers are needed to help run and oversee carnival games. Volunteers will help for one-hour time periods throughout the event.

New Kansas City Neighborhood Academy Hires Principal


Dr. Robin E. Henderson has been hired by the Kansas City Neighborhood Academy (KCNA) to serve as principal of the new high-performance charter school. Dr. Henderson previously served as the Executive Director of Memphis Teacher Residency. Other previous posts include Associate Professor of Education at Union University and Assistant Professor of Elementary Education at Indiana Wesleyan University and Dean of Students and classroom teacher at the elementary level.
