FOX 4: Success By Six hopes to give kids boost beginning at young age

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A new resource center for children hopes to give kids a boost right at the beginning of their careers as students.

The program is called Success by Six and it’s located inside Faxon Elementary School.

The center is filled with educational toys, books and games appropriate for children from birth to eight.

Parents or caretakers can check out the items free of charge.

A parent educator will staff the center to help with selections.

UNI Celebrates Grand Opening of Success By 6 Resource Center

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The first Success By 6 Resource Center in the Urban Neighborhood Initiative (UNI) service area will open to families at Faxon Elementary on Wednesday, February 11. The Urban Neighborhood Initiative secured funding to initiate this United Way of Greater Kansas City and Kansas City Public Schools’ Parents as Teachers program in its target area. The center aims to ensure every young child in the community is healthy, safe, nurtured, and enters school ready to succeed.

UNI Hiring Fair Connects Job Seekers with Companies That are Hiring

More than 500 job seekers attended the Urban Neighborhood Initiative’s 2014 Hiring Fair at St. James United Methodist Church. The annual event connects companies in the Kansas City area with interested candidates. The UNI Hiring Fair is unique among similar opportunities because only companies with current vacancies participate in the fair, giving candidates better prospects for securing a position. One interested candidate noted the importance of the UNI fair in her job search. “It’s nice to get a little more information and to meet people face to face,” said Jowana.

Ivanhoe's 'Lots of Love' Program Receives Recognition

The Ivanhoe neighborhood's Lots of Love program has been recognized as the "Best Community Take-Back Project" by the Pitch community newspaper. Ivanhoe has more than 500 overgrown and abandoned lots and the community took the initiative to reclaim and repurpose some of them. One, at 3700 Woodland, has been reimagined as a "meet and greet" location, featuring a fire pit, picnic tables and an orchard. Another, a block over, has been designated as the "let's play" lot, with brand-new equipment for both kids and adults to enjoy.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Children under the age of five in nine urban core neighborhoods soon will be able to get one new book a month to call their own. It’s one of the chamber of commerce’s “Big Five” goals, part of the Urban Neighborhood Initiative.

Interviews Take Place on the Spot at the UNI Hiring Fair

The Urban Neighborhood Initiative, along with the Urban League of Greater Kansas City and The Housing Authority of Kansas City, Missouri, will host a Hiring Fair on October 7, 2014 at St. James United Methodist Church, 5540 Wayne, Kansas City, Missouri. The unique aspect of this event is that the participating companies have current job openings and will be conducting on-site job interviews with the goal of hiring qualified candidates.

Ivanhoe Celebrates New Housing Construction with a Groundbreaking Ceremony

The Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council invites the community to join together in celebration of construction for the first 3 (of 7) duplexes that will revitalize the 3800 block of Euclid in Kansas City, Missouri. The ceremony will be held August 7th at 9 a.m. at the corner of 38th and Euclid. Participants are invited to the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council office at 3700 Woodland, Kansas City, Missouri, for a reception following the ceremony.

NHS Launches Search for New President

Kansas City's NHS, an organization committed to revitalizing and maintaining designated urban neighborhoods, has launched a search for a new president.

A search committee has been formed and NHS has retained HCapSearchNP to assist with the leadership transition and guide the search process. HCapSearchNP has particular expertise in nonprofit executive searches and consultation.

Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council Presents Small Business Workshop

Looking to start your own business or need resources to help with your current business? The Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council is presenting a Small Business Workshop & Resource Fair on Thursday, May 22nd from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council. This workshop will provide attendees with an understanding of credit and financial health and availability of financing in our community with special emphasis on the Kansas City Regional Microloan Fund.
