2017 Health and Wellness Resource Fair Set for Nov. 4

UNI is proud to be partnering again with the Junior League of Kansas City to host their annual Health and Wellness Resource Fair for 2017. This year’s fair will take place Saturday, Nov. 4, at DeLaSalle Education Center and lasts from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The Health and Wellness Resource Fair is notably offering flu shots free of charge for the first 70 participants. In order to receive a flu shot, attendees are required to bring their Medicare or Medicaid card (if applicable), as well as a photo I.D.

UNI, Heartland Conservation Alliance Recap Oct. 21 Vacant Lots Workshop

On the morning of Saturday, Oct. 21, UNI partnered with the Heartland Conservation Alliance to host a workshop called The Vacant to Vibrant Guide to Working with Vacant Lots at the Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center near 47th & Troost.

Several neighborhood leaders and residents were present for an interactive learning session and discussion. Attendees enjoyed a light breakfast and were offered “mini grant” opportunities for projects focused on transforming a vacant lot within the UNI boundaries.

UNI Invites Community to Attend Open Houses of Rehabbed Homes

On Saturday, Oct. 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Urban Neighborhood Initiative (UNI) is hosting an open house event for three newly rehabbed homes within the Ivanhoe Neighborhood. The open house event will start at 3416 Park Avenue.

The houses in this historic neighborhood are often less expensive than what families can typically expect to pay for rent. Potential home-owners just need to have a stable, full-time job.

More than 1,300 Attend UNI Fun & Fitness Fair

On Saturday, May 13, the Urban Neighborhood Initiative (UNI) partnered with the Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri, Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center and several other community organizations to host the second-annual outdoor Fun & Fitness Fair. The fair, which attracted more than 1,300 people from the community, was held on the campus of the Kansas City Police East Patrol Division Station.

160 Attend First-Ever Explore. Experience East of Troost Tour

On Saturday, April 22, the Urban Neighborhood Initiative (UNI) partnered with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) and 10 neighborhood organizations within the UNI geographic footprint to host the first-ever Explore. Experience East of Troost neighborhood tour. Five buses and more than 160 potential investors and community members took part in the tour, which provided an excellent first-hand look at what the UNI communities have to offer.

UNI, Junior League to Host Health & Wellness Resource Fair

The Urban Neighborhood Initiative (UNI) and the Junior League of Kansas City are partnering to host the 2016 Health & Wellness Resource Fair Saturday, Oct. 8, at DeLaSalle Education Center. The fair lasts from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., and will feature free flu shots for the first 90 attendees from the community.

The Health & Wellness Resource Fair will also offer free health screenings to adults and children, as well as free bags of food and turkey vouchers. The first 300 participants will each receive free hats, gloves and more.

Employers to offer on-site interviews Sept. 20 at UNI Annual Hiring Fair

More than 25 employers from around Kansas City are looking to meet a talented pool career seekers at next week’s Annual UNI Hiring Fair, hosted by the Urban Neighborhood Initiative and Urban League of Kansas City. The Hiring Fair will take place Tuesday, Sept. 20, at St. James United Methodist Church (56th & Paseo) in Kansas City from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Parent Leadership Training Institute to Host Info Sessions for Community Leaders Aug. 30

The Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) would like to welcome school, non-profit and community leaders to a pair of informational sessions on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City.

The PLTI enables parents to become leading advocates for their children, teaching parents advocacy skills that will help change their children’s lives and improve lifelong health, safety and learning.

KC's Newest Charter School Receives $1.6 Million Boost

Kansas City Neighborhood Academy (KCNA) today announced grants of $1-million and $600,000, respectively, from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Hall Family Foundation to support the new charter school established by the Urban Neighborhood Initiative (UNI) in partnership with Kansas City Public Schools.

KCNA will open its doors August 2 for the 2016-17 school year, serving Pre-K through second grade. Additional grade levels will be added in succeeding years, ultimately serving students in Pre-K through sixth grade.

KCNA Seeking Volunteers to Help Clean, Prepare School Grounds for Aug. 2 Opening

Kansas City Neighborhood Academy (KCNA) is currently seeking approximately 50 volunteers to assist with interior and exterior cleaning, maintenance and preparation for the new school’s Aug. 2 opening.

KCNA is looking to conduct the following tasks:
- removing and relocating excess furniture from the building
- general cleaning and debris removal in classrooms and common spaces
- painting lines on playground and sprucing-up the outdoor playground area
- assembling new bookshelves and distributing to classrooms
